Your Guide in Eating the Right Fish

Eating fish is a good choice for a healthy diet if you are going to venture into the world of weight loss program. It is also safe to say that eating fish help reduce your risk for coronary heart disease, stroke and much more to mention. It is not only good in losing weight but it also has beneficial effects in having a healthy lifestyle due to the fact that it contains higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids. But here’s the catch… NOT all fish is a good choice and some types of fish are safer than others.

On the other hand, it is not only eating the right fish but it is also about balancing your consumption of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Studies indicate that the optimal ratio of these essential fatty acids vary with the kind of disease under consideration. It is because of the fact that chronic diseases are caused or due to multi-factors and multi-genetic as well. Experts believe that the therapeutic dosage or a lower ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids (i.e. 2-3:1) is the desired dose in reducing the risk of many chronic diseases.

Deep sea fish is the best source of high levels of essential omega-3 fatty acids yet this type of fish is now also tainted with toxins since the vast majority of sea water are becoming polluted or already are. This also raised the argument that farmed fish is much better than those caught from the sea. On the contrary, farm raised fish have little omega-3 content since they are fed pellets and experts have thought that the omega-3 came from the natural diet of the fish in the wild. And that just added more complications in the more complicated modern world.

What I believe is this… cutting down your consumption of omega-6 fatty acids and eating the right fish or foods high in omega-3 fatty acids is probably the desirable dose to improve your health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  1. I like eating fish but mostly I eat fresh water fish. According to your post, these have less omega-3 fatty acids. I guess, I would have to find other types of fish which are healthier.
