Parents of high school seniors know the summer before heading off to college is a season of transition on so many levels. It can be an incredibly emotional time as parents let go and teens strive to create a new identity. On top of all that there is the matter of preparing to live in a college dormatority or in an off campus apartment – it’s almost like setting up a new house because you need everything from dorm bedding supplies to pots and pans plus it all needs to show up at once.
The easy way to shop for everything from laundry and clothes hampers to twin extra long bedding is to jump online to the websites of the major bath and bedding stores you already frequent. Most feature college dorm checklists along with e-mail and social networking capabilities which allow you, your child and future roommates to work together to come up with a décor plan and avoid duplication of common items.
Bedding is a good place to begin since most dormitories feature twin extra long mattresses; this means that a standard twin fitted and flat sheet will not work and you will need to invest in new sheets. Standard twin size comforters and quilts will fit on a twin-xl mattress so don’t go crazy trying to find extra long ones. It is a good idea to choose a quilt or comforter that is reversible such as one with a print on one side and a solid color on the reverse.
Pillows are particularly important as most students spend a good amount of time studying and surfing the net in bed; investing in two or more pillows will allow your child to position themselves comfortably for resting, longing and working in or on the bed.
